Synopsis
Set to the backdrop of the Australian bush and Sydney’s notorious Inner West, The Fighting Father is an uplifting documentary which follows the life of Australia’s oldest professional boxer and Priest, Father Dave Smith, as he trains for one last professional fight. This rematch with Wild Bill offers redemption for Father Dave. With fears surrounding his age and prior brain hemorrhage cancelling his last match, this time he’s not coming home without a fight. As the big day approaches, we watch Father Dave grapple with homelessness, due to his forced resignation from the Anglican church, as he attempts to keep the doors of his interfaith boxing gym open. Punctuating his present identity struggle, we delve into his unique history through conversation with Dave’s friends. These include: Training the Syrian Olympic boxing team in war-fractured Palmyra, Boxing with Julian Assange in the Ecuadorian Embassy on Easter Sunday, Breaking the World Record for the highest number of continuous rounds in the ring, Being illegally smuggled onto Manus Island to interview refugees and his close relationship with Israeli spy Mordechai Vanunu. Through interview and observation we are invited into the highly insular communities that exist at the intersection of Anglicanism, Islam and boxing in Australia, whilst seeing the struggle of a Father who is fighting for his beliefs.
